When I was the director of communications at the UNC School of Social Work, I launched our organization into the realm of social media. I continued to manage and grow its presence there as it became one of the top schools in that space.
In 2008, the School was among the education world’s early adopters of Twitter as a vehicle for promotion, distributing our news stories, and connecting with people. Our social media efforts then grew to include Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, Flickr, and faculty and student blogs. Complementing this was the news blog I developed, Contact Magazine, which heavily incorporated social media to not only push news out to the public but to bring people into the School’s website. My social media strategy attracted national attention. NASW News, based in Washington, D.C., featured me in a lead article in its newspaper and website, distributed to all members of the National Association of Social Workers.
In 2012, I launched my healthy lifestyle blog, and use social media strategically to drive traffic to it. I have a presence on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Periscope, Snapchat and Google+, and have worked hard to grow a following. Today I’m one of the leading health and fitness bloggers on Twitter, with over 40,000 followers.
I also enjoy presenting workshops on strategic social media and blogging, and have spoken to classes and groups at UNC.
